Unidentified Growth Factor for a Lactic Acid Bacterium.

Weinman, Donald E. (University of Georgia, Athens), George K. Morris, and William L. Williams. Unidentified growth factor for a lactic acid bacterium. J. Bacteriol. 87:263-269. 1964.-Lactobacillus bulgaricus Georgia strain required an unidentified growth factor, named Georgia bulgaricus factor (GBF), when grown on a semisynthetic basal medium. Aqueous extracts of torula yeast and beef liver wer...

Adaptations in growth factor requirements for lactic acid bacteria.

Adaptive processes in bacteria, whereby growth of organisms in deficient or drug-enriched media can be initiated through the production of new or latent enzyme systems, have been widely described. Reviews on this subject by Karstrom (1938), Dubos (1940), and Monod (1947) have provided examples of adaptation in bacterial carbohydrases and proteases, in enzymes of fermentation and glycolysis, and...

Lactobacillus sanfrancisco a key sourdough lactic acid bacterium: a review

Sourdough may be considered a traditional product with a great future. Studies on the sourdough microflora have recently been improved. In this paper, research on Lactobacillus sanfrancisco, a key sourdough lactic acid bacterium, is reviewed. The physiology, trophic relationships with sourdough related organisms and the genetics are considered in order to explain and improve the biotechnologica...

Growth of Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL-B523 in an alkaline medium: suboptimal pH growth inhibition of a lactic acid bacterium.

Bacterial profile modification (BPM), a form of tertiary oil recovery, diverts water from the water-flooded high-permeability zone into the oil-bearing low-permeability zone. During field use, exopolymer-producing bacteria plug the high-permeability zone only in the immediate vicinity of the injection point (the near-well bore region). For effective BPM the plug must penetrate far into the form...

Efficient homofermentative L-(+)-lactic acid production from xylose by a novel lactic acid bacterium, Enterococcus mundtii QU 25.

Enterococcus mundtii QU 25, a newly isolated lactic acid bacterium, efficiently metabolized xylose into l-lactate. In batch fermentations, the strain produced 964 mM l-(+)-lactate from 691 mM xylose, with a yield of 1.41 mol/mol xylose consumed and an extremely high optical purity of ≥99.9% without acetate production.
